Understanding Childhood Challenges and Their Lasting Impact

Children and teens may encounter unique challenges during their early years that can affect their behavior, emotions, and overall well-being. When these concerns are left unaddressed, they have the potential to cause enduring effects on a child’s emotional, behavioral, and mental health. Early intervention is essential, as it provides critical support for children and adolescents, helping to alleviate difficulties at home, in school, and in social settings. By intervening early, children and teens can develop effective coping strategies and resilience, equipping them for healthier and more successful transitions into adulthood. Your child’s therapist at Routes to Bloom will begin with a comprehensive mental health evaluation to accurately identify any problems or diagnoses that your child may need support with and determine the most appropriate treatment options.

The Role of Child & Adolescent Therapy in Mental Health

Therapy can play a pivotal role in enhancing mental health outcomes for young people. The approach to therapy may vary based on the age, type, and severity of the child’s difficulties. Involving family members in therapy sessions can further strengthen the effectiveness of treatment by fostering understanding and providing additional support within the home environment. Typically, we work with children between the ages of three to 18. The goal is to help these children improve their thinking patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors, empowering them to succeed not only in school, at home and in their relationships but also in other aspects of their lives.

Therapy Techniques We Use May Include

Our approach to child and adolescent therapy uses a blend of evidence-based practices including the following:

  • Behavior Therapy teaches children and their families how to strengthen positive child behaviors and eliminate or reduce unwanted or problem behaviors.

  • Play Therapy is a type of psychotherapy mainly for children, but it can help adults too. It uses play to let children express feelings they can't put into words. Its main goals are to build emotional skills, coping abilities, and address trauma or major life changes.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy aims to change unhelpful thoughts and emotions that influence a child's behavior. Your therapist will guide your child to recognize, assess, and adjust distorted thinking and emotional responses. The process may include sessions with the child alone or together with caregivers.

  • Family Therapy involves members of the family and aims to improve communication and resolve conflicts; helping to strengthen relationships and a better understanding of one another.

  • Parent training in behavior management Your child’s therapist works with parents and/or caregivers to strengthen and nurture the relationship between parents and children and learn or improve skills to manage their child's behavior, practicing skills daily. Teachers, school and others who also care for and spend time with children can be included.

  • Other treatments Treatment of other mental health concerns including trauma; anxiety; depression; grief and loss; neurodivergence and executive functioning; life transitions; and many others. We have experienced trained clinicians to help meet the various needs your child or teen may need.
